However, it is in its final stretch, after follow-up single 'Cheating', that the album Easy - John Newman (5) - Tribute (CD hits its stride. The demented 80s style stomper 'Gold Easy - John Newman (5) - Tribute (CD prefigures Sam Smith's hit 'Stay with me' while leading into the passionate but catchy 'Goodnight, Goodbye' and the rousing 'All I need is you'.
Essential for car journeys on dark autumn nights. Report abuse. I'm a white guy but, back in my Mod days, I wouldn't buy anything other than black music. I've mellowed Easy - John Newman (5) - Tribute (CD the years and do buy a much wider range of music these days. He sang one song - I think it might have been Easy from this album - where if you close your eyes and go back to the sixties you can clearly hear the haunting sound of Otis Redding singing I've Been Loving You Too Long.
In fact it's what made me check the album out. Like Otis, John is not possessed of a natural singing voice - it's very, how shall we say, idiosyncratic. But this is more than compensated for by the raw soul and passion that come out in nearly all of the tracks on this album. White man's soul! More recently I saw the music video for Love me Again, which pays homage to my Mod days as does the title track on this album.
As so many other reviewers have said, there isn't one weak track on the album. The really impressive thing for me is that, at the tender age of 23, this guy writes, produces and mixes all the tracks you are listening to. Amazing talent! I can't understand why the album hasn't been nominated for a Brit award - maybe its just too recent.
I really liked "Love me again" then "Cheating" was released and that was Album) excellent song. So I took a chance with the album and it seriously paid off. The whole album is excellent and there is not a bad song in there. There is a good mix of upbeat and slower songs well mixed up. Some of Album) tracks are better than the ones released as singles in my oppinion but that makes it all better when you listen to the album as you are getting your moneys worth. I like the tribute slant of the album, a humble homage to the past it seems, though if this guy's talent progresses, he won't have much to be humble about.
The album's wonderful and reading some of the You Tube and international reviews, I suspect he's going to become a very considerable artist. I hope he's not spoiled by the corporate monsters. On superior cuts such as "Cheating", meanwhile, this year-old be-quiffed Yorkshireman looks like continuing his gilded strike rate.
But where Plan B or Amy Winehousethe doyenne of revival pop, always added an element of top spin to their tributes, Newman merely reinterprets well, rather than reinventing. The soul singer is paying homage to a wide range of musical influences that have helped shape his sound, the list including everyone from Elvis Presley and Tina Turner to Jay Z and Adele.
While his tastes are obviously eclectic, his first collection infuses these inspirations without compromising consistency. Let it be said that John Newman is neo-soul to the core — his distinctive vocal with a tinge of rasp giving him no option in the matter. That's not to say other influences don't play an important part throughout his music. But while the musicality of the record dips its toe in and out of genres, the subject of love remains prominently at the forefront.
Whether Newman is reflecting on the difficulties of the heart on 'Easy' or crooning for forgiveness on 'Love Me Again', Tribute thrives on a rollercoaster narrative of broken relationships, gutsy emotions and broody intent.
What's more, Album), the collection doesn't suffer from burn-out towards the finish. But he's keen to demonstrate how much deeper his influences go, introducing this album with a litany of soul singers' names leading into "Tribute", his smoky timbre borne on exultant strings that also allude to a classic-soul era.
It's impressive stuff, though as early as the third or fourth track, the formula of impassioned smouldering leading to hugely telegraphed refrains is getting a little predictable. Variety is furnished by the desolate plaint of "Out of My Head" and the gospelly backing vocals of "Running", also the source of the album's best line: "Trying to stop a river when it wants to rise.
